What Are The Dangers Of Plastic Surgery

By Clare Eisenman

It was not always like that but today plastic surgery is quite safe. The mortality rate has dropped to about 1 in less than 60,000 cases. Less than 1 percent of the patients suffer from critical complications. The great safety record was not only achieved by big improvements in the used equipment and materials. Today plastic surgeons have to go through a certification process. Ongoing education in this field is the best protection against risks.

There are still risks remaining which can't be easily removed. Maybe the patient has a history of high or low blood pressure or other genetic diseases. Problems with the heart or the lungs can lead to complications. Cancer is a severe problem and still not curable in many cases. Obesity is a common problem that can lead to blood clots easily.

What else plays a role? If your general health condition is good then your risks are lower. If you have any diseases like diabetes, arthritis or a heart disease for example you are at higher risk. You should disclose all health conditions to your surgeon.

Smoking is very bad. It increases the risk of infection dramatically. A study has shown a that smoking increases the risks by 1500% when having a face lift. You should stop smoking at least 2-3 weeks before and after the surgery to lower the chances for serious complications.

If you are obese, smoke a lot, have a problem with your heart and drink a lot alcohol you are probably risking your life with a plastic surgery. It is probably better to make some changes to your lifestyle and live healthier before you take this venture.

No matter if you are the perfect candidate or not, there are always risks that can't be removed and ignored. With thousands of surgeries done every day there can't be everything perfect all time. A fat removal surgery or also called liposuction has become the most popular form of cosmetic surgery the last years. This surgery for example has a higher risk of high blood loss and infection than other surgeries.

The problem of blood loss has also other complications. During the surgery the blood pressure could drop, the heart could start beating irregularly and there could be even a heart attack. Blood loss problems could even make a second surgery necessary.

Infections are another reason when a plastic surgery goes wrong. Smokers have a much higher risk of infections. Antibiotics must be taken several days after a surgery to avoid the serious complications of an infection.

A surgery today has become a very safe thing but you have seen that not every risk can be removed. Don't forget the remaining risk factors and avoid everything what could cause them. A great cosmetic surgery can go wrong even when little things are overlooked.
